Ethyl isothiocyanatoacetate is an active methylene ester hydrochloride that has been shown to inhibit the activity of carnitine acyltransferase, which is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of fatty acids. This inhibition can lead to insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. Ethyl isothiocyanatoacetate also inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting lipid synthesis and inducing apoptosis. It has been shown to be effective against hyperproliferative diseases such as tumors. Ethyl isothiocyanatoacetate inhibits cell proliferation by competitively binding with choline, a substrate for phospholipase A2, which catalyzes the release of arachidonic acid from membrane phospholipids. This leads to increased levels of arachidonic acid and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), which may result in apoptosis.
