Descrizione

Epoxides are compounds that contain an epoxide group, a structure that is composed of two oxygen atoms and one carbon atom. The asymmetric synthesis of 1,2-epoxy-7-octene has been achieved by the use of phosphotungstic acid as a catalyst.

The reaction product from this synthesis was shown to have anti-tumour activity in hamster cells by inhibiting the growth of v79 cells. This compound also inhibits the growth of wild-type and mutant strains in mammalian cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit cell proliferation through hydrogen bonding or ring opening reactions with DNA.
