5-Ethoxy-4-methyloxazole (EMO) is a synthetic compound that is produced by the reaction of calcium oxide and an organic acid. The reaction time for this synthesis ranges from two to three hours. EMO has been shown to be a water-soluble, nonvolatile, white solid that can be saponified with either water or an alkali. It is also soluble in most organic solvents. After saponification, EMO yields a mixture of hydrochloric acid and oxazolecarboxylic acid. The hydrochloric acid can be removed by heating the solution until it evaporates. The oxazolecarboxylic acid can then be reacted with maleic anhydride to produce the unsymmetrical 5-ethoxy-4-methyloxazole carboxylic acid (EMOCA). This product has been shown to have acidic properties and can react with calcium carbonate to form an insoluble
