Ethylaluminium sesquichloride is a glycol ether that is used as an inorganic acid catalyst for polymerization reactions. It can be activated by high temperatures and cationic polymerization. The coordination geometry of ethylaluminium sesquichloride is octahedral, with the aluminium atom located at the center of six oxygen atoms. This coordination geometry is important for understanding the reaction mechanism and kinetic data. Ethylaluminium sesquichloride has been shown to be an excellent catalyst for hydroxyl group-containing polymers. Optimum concentration is 0.25 M, while kinetic data show that this reaction proceeds via a heterogeneous mechanism under activated conditions.
