Ethyl 3-hydroxybutyrate is an ester of the fatty acid, ethyl ester. It can be synthesized by reacting ethyl chloride with a high-resistance calcium carbonate as the starting material. This reaction can be carried out in a wide range of solvents, but it is optimal in chlorinated hydrocarbons and fluorinated hydrocarbons. The optimum temperature for this reaction is between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius. The yield of this reaction can be improved by optimizing the conditions such as the reaction vessel, process optimization, and reaction yield.
