It is also used as an activator for viologen or hydrogen chloride, which are reactive substances. 4-Ethylbenzyl chloride is insoluble in water and reacts with primary alcohols to form esters. The reaction time depends on the type of alcohol and ranges from 24 hours to 3 days. 4-Ethylbenzyl chloride is active in the cytoplasm of cells and can be attached to bioactive molecules to produce new compounds with a variety of properties.
