2-Ethyl-4,5-dimethylthiazole is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C6H8N2S. It is an oxazole that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. 2-Ethyl-4,5-dimethylthiazole is soluble in water and reacts with hydrogen chloride to produce the cyclic tetrachlorohydroquinone. Oxidation of 2-ethyl-4,5-dimethylthiazole by chlorine in the presence of tetrachlorohydroquinone produces the corresponding n-oxide. The reaction mechanism for this transformation involves an oxidative addition process followed by an elimination of hydrogen chloride (HCl) from a sulfur ylide intermediate to give an unstable sulfenic acid which can be hydrolyzed to produce the desired product. Cyclization of 2-ethyl-4,5-dimethylthiazole is mediated by a water molecule and proceeds via a concerted [3+2
