Fluorometholone is a fluorocorticoid that is used to treat inflammatory conditions of the skin, eye, and airways. It has been shown to be effective against microbial infections in animals by inhibiting the production of fatty acids and reducing inflammation. Fluorometholone has also been shown to inhibit glucocorticoid receptors in cells, which may lead to less side effects when compared with other corticosteroids.
The drug is injected into the affected area, or taken orally as an injection solution. In cases of severe inflammation, it can be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. Fluorometholone can also be given topically, but this is not common due to its high potency.
