N-Formylpiperidine is a chemical compound that has the formula CH(CH)NCHO. It is an unsaturated heterocycle and a derivative of piperidine, with two formyl groups attached to nitrogen atoms. N-Formylpiperidine is prepared by reaction of piperidine with diazomethane in the presence of an acid catalyst. The product can be seen as a precursor to some pharmaceuticals, such as clonazepam, alprazolam, and diphenhydramine. N-Formylpiperidine has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in Sprague-Dawley rats by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are compounds that act as local hormones. This inhibition may be due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups on fatty acids.
