It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of cholinesterases, which are enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of acetylcholine at the synapse. 3-(4-Fluorophenyl)propionic acid also inhibits the formation of epoxides by reacting with trichophyton mentagrophytes. This compound is used in synthetic techniques and has been shown to have antituberculosis activity. 3-(4-Fluorophenyl)propionic acid is an agonist for butyrylcholinesterase, which is found in many tissues including brain and muscle tissue.
