3-Fluoro-4-methylbenzonitrile is a dihedral, synthesized triazole that exhibits antifungal activity and can be used to synthesize fluconazole or itraconazole. 3-Fluoro-4-methylbenzonitrile is an optical isomer that has been shown to exhibit fluconazole stereoselectivity. 3-Fluoro-4-methylbenzonitrile inhibits the growth of fungi by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, which is necessary for fungal cell membrane function and integrity. This agent also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. 3-Fluoro-4-methylbenzonitrile has been shown to be effective against dioxane in the environment and may be of use in treating environmental pollution.
