It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. 5FIA has been synthesized from amino acid derivatives in a single step, which is more cost and time efficient than previous reported methods. The mechanism of action for 5FIA is thought to involve interactions with functional groups on the bacterial cell wall, such as lipids, proteins, and polysaccharides. FTIR spectroscopy revealed that 5FIA reacts with hydroxyl groups on the cell wall surface through an acid catalysis mechanism. This reaction produces carboxylic acids or esters as byproducts.
