Gamabufotalin is an inhibitor of P-glycoprotein. It has been shown to have inhibitory properties on the growth of human leukemia cells (HL60) in vitro and in vivo. Gamabufotalin selectively inhibits the proliferation of HL60 cells by triggering apoptosis via a p53-dependent pathway. It also inhibits the growth of papillary muscle cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit signal pathways and induce apoptosis. Gamabufotalin has been shown to have a strong inhibitory effect on bacterial growth and is used for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by Gram-positive bacteria. The compound was isolated from the natural products dehydrocostus lactone, which was found to have anti-inflammatory effects as well as anti-cancer properties.
