Glycine is a non-essential amino acid and the simplest of all proteinogenic amino acids. The physiological level of glycine in humans is about 1-2 g per day, but it can be synthesized in the body from serine or converted from proline. Glycine has been shown to have a number of functions in the human body, including cell factor activity, enzyme activities, and receptor activity. It is also used for wastewater treatment and as a component of peptide hormones, such as gastrin. Glycine may also play a role in infectious diseases by inhibiting microbial growth through its antimicrobial effects. Glycine has been shown to inhibit Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus on agar plates. It also inhibits Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth by decreasing its lipid content."
