It has been shown to be more sensitive than other chemical reagents in the detection of these ions at concentrations as low as 10−14 M. 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane reacts with the hydroxyl group of water vapor and hydrochloric acid, forming a diazonium salt. This salt reacts with an organic compound containing a free amine group, such as an amino acid or protein, to form a complex species. The intensity of the FTIR spectrum of this complex species is proportional to the concentration of the proton or metal ion in solution.
