Geranyl nitrite is a chemical that is used for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase, which leads to an increase in intracellular levels of cAMP and calcium ions. This activity makes it an effective bronchodilator. Geranyl nitrite also has been shown to have a variety of biological effects downstream of the receptor, including inhibition of fatty acid synthesis, induction of monoclonal antibodies, and activation of cation channels.
