4-Hydroxybutyl acrylate (4HBA) is an acrylic acid ester that belongs to the group of reactive monomers. It is synthesized by reacting 4-hydroxybutanoic acid with acrylic acid in the presence of a catalyst, such as trifluoroacetic acid or hydrochloric acid. The chemical reaction of 4HBA and water vapor can cause thermal expansion or shrinkage. 4HBA has been used to create polymers with light-emitting properties for use in cell culture.
