It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of bacterial growth on surfaces and for preventing the spread of bacteria from one surface to another. 9α-Hydroxyandrost-4-ene-3,17-dione has also been found to have tuberculosis inhibitory activity. This compound is catalysed by surface antigens and oxygenases and can be inhibited by a carbon source. The inhibition of bacterial growth may be due to the inhibition of protein synthesis.
