It has also been shown to have antibacterial efficacy against gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. 2-Hexyldecanoic acid causes hemolysis in red blood cells and has been shown to have an allergic reaction in guinea pigs. This compound binds to magnetic particles, which may be due to its chemical structure that contains both a carboxyl group and an ethyl side chain. 2-Hexyldecanoic acid can be extracted from nepeta cataria (catnip) by acetate extraction and is used as a control agent for other chemicals.
