• Descrizione: Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is synthesized in the adrenal gland and has a broad range of biological effects. It is an endogenous anti-inflammatory agent and immunosuppressant that can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin 1β (IL-1β). Cortisol also has inhibitory properties on intestinal motility and has been shown to be effective in reducing bowel disease activity. In some cases, cortisol may cause high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and hypercorticism. Cortisol levels are typically lower at night than during the day due to its circadian rhythm. The concentration–time curve for cortisol can be determined using LC-MS/MS methods. Cortisol is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes into 6b-hydroxycortisol.
