It has been shown that 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)furanone can be extracted from plant leaves by washing with acetate solution. The extraction efficiency and the amount of extractable 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)furanone are dependent on pH. A light exposure experiment shows that the biological properties of 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)furanone are affected by light exposure.
