It is a hydration product of 2-hydroxyisobutyrate, which can be derived from butyrate or valerate. The synthesis of this compound has been shown to involve two steps: (1) the reaction of 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid with an organic base and (2) the dehydration of the resulting product with a tertiary amine. It has also been used in experiments on ventricular myocytes and on bladder cells, where it was shown to have an inhibitory effect on cell growth.
