Hirudin is a drug that is used to prevent blood clots. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain types of human cancer cells and to have anti-inflammatory properties. Hirudin binds to heparin, which prevents the activation of thrombin by antithrombin III, preventing clotting. The drug also inhibits the proliferation and migration of neuronal cells in culture.
