It is an analog of isocaproic acid, which is a substrate for the biosynthesis of 3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoic acid. This compound is produced by Chromobacterium violaceum, and has been shown to be synthesized from 3-hydoxyisovalerate and 4-methylvalerate in wild type strains. The biosynthetic pathway of 3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoic acid can be determined by gene analysis, which reveals that it is synthesized through the activity of two enzymes, cyclic lipopeptide synthase and cyclic lipopeptide lyase.
