4-(Hydroxymethyl)benzoic acid is a chemical compound that has been used in the synthesis of a number of biologically active compounds. It has been used in the ligation reaction with chlorides to produce amines, and in the synthesis of cyclic peptides. 4-(Hydroxymethyl)benzoic acid has also shown potential as an inhibitor of butyric acid production by Clostridium species and other Gram-positive bacteria.
