8-Hydroxyjulolidine is a molecule that has been used as a probe for the detection of acidic environments. It is sensitive to metal ions and hydrolyzes in an acid environment, producing chloride and hydrochloric acid. 8-Hydroxyjulolidine fluoresces when it meets the substrate and undergoes a reaction with the metal ion. This process is enhanced by bathochromic dyes and organic solvents. The aromatic residues from the molecule are important for detecting metal ions in acidic environments.
