1-Hydroxy-2-naphthalenecarboxaldehyde is a molecule that has been shown to have surfactant properties. It can be used as a replacement for sodium dodecyl sulfate in detergent formulations. 1-Hydroxy-2-naphthalenecarboxaldehyde also has intramolecular hydrogen bonding, which is thought to be the reason for its surfactant properties. In addition, this molecule has a protonated hydroxyl group and can form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. 1-Hydroxy-2-naphthalenecarboxaldehyde has been shown to enhance the fluorescence of some natural compounds and is currently being studied as a probe for determining binding constants in human serum.
