The compound is unsymmetrical, with two molecules of 4-hydroxyphthalonitrile linked by a disulfide bond. The structure was determined by UV spectroscopy and it was found to be more efficient at killing cancer cells than other cancer drugs. 4-Hydroxyphthalonitrile is also an efficient method for the preparation of optical samples.
