Descrizione

2'-Hydroxypropiophenone (2'-HP) is a tetranuclear compound that was isolated from a bacterial strain. The hydrolysis of 2'-HP in the presence of hydrochloric acid and acetaldehyde produces salicylaldehyde and carbon dioxide. This reaction mechanism is hypothesized to proceed through the following sequence:

The inhibition study showed that 2'-HP inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their electron transport system. This molecule also has been shown to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species, which are thought to be responsible for the oxidative injury observed in cells following exposure to 2'-HP. Structural studies have revealed that this molecule contains a benzene ring with two hydroxyl groups on either side, making it an aromatic ketone.
2'-Hydroxypropiophenone is used as a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of other molecules with pharmaceutical properties such as anti-inflammatory agents, anti-cancer drugs, and antibiotics.
