Ethynylcytidine is a nucleoside analogue that inhibits topoisomerase II and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes involved in DNA replication. The compound has been shown to be an effective antitumor agent for solid tumours and also has potential as a biomarker or drug transporter. Ethynylcytidine can inhibit the growth of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer cells in vitro by preventing the formation of chromosomal DNA and impairing cellular respiration. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the drug transporter P-glycoprotein.
