Isobutyl isothiocyanate (IBITC) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that has been shown to kill bacteria in vitro. The antibacterial activity of IBITC is due to the hydroxyl group, which reacts with proteins on the surface of bacteria, destroying their ability to maintain their cell membrane integrity and causing leakage of intracellular components. IBITC has also been shown to inhibit the growth of carcinogenic cells in vitro. This compound does not seem to have any significant toxicity in mammalian cell cultures at concentrations up to 100 µg/mL.
