Iridium chloride is a catalyst that is used in the treatment of wastewater. It can be used in the synthesis of fatty acids and as a pharmacological treatment for hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, and diabetes. The iridium ion has a redox potential of +1.07 volts and is able to oxidize chloride ions to produce hydrochloric acid. Iridium chloride also has the ability to chelate ligands and catalyze reactions with potassium dichromate, which are both important properties for fabricating metal alloys.
