Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the group of drugs known as fenamates. It is used in the treatment of inflammation, fever, and pain. Mefenamic acid inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes, thereby preventing the formation of prostaglandins. This inhibition leads to reduced synthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators such as thromboxane A2, prostacyclin, and leukotrienes. Mefenamic acid also inhibits the production of cytokines such as interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor-α, which have been implicated in inflammatory reactions.
Mefenamic acid has been shown to be active against gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecalis by inhibiting their growth by blocking protein synthesis.
