Lithium tertiary butoxide is a chemical reagent that can be used in metathesis reactions. It is a white solid that is soluble in organic solvents such as THF and ether. Lithium tertiary butoxide has an activation energy of 51 kcal/mol and is most active when the hydroxyl group is at the para position. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy, UV absorption, and kinetic data have been obtained for this compound. The trifluoromethanesulfonic acid-catalyzed reaction of lithium tertiary butoxide with copper chloride gives the desired product.
Lithium tertiary butoxide reacts with various functional groups to give different products. For example, it can react with epoxides to give cyclic ethers or with fatty acids to give esters.
