Lanosterol is a sterol that is a precursor of cholesterol and other steroids. It has been shown to have potent inducers of the atp-binding cassette transporter (ABC) family, which are proteins that transport molecules across cellular membranes. ABC transporters play an important role in the inflammatory response and are involved in a number of biological processes. Lanosterol also interacts with toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which mediates the immune system's response to infection. Lanosterol has been shown to be active against opportunistic fungal infections, such as Candida albicans, by inhibiting epoxidase activity and the expression of response elements.
