It is a prodrug that undergoes first-pass metabolism to yield loperamide, its active form. Loperamide EP Impurity G inhibits bacterial growth by binding to bacterial 50S ribosomal subunits and preventing their protein synthesis. This drug also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin production in inflammatory bowel disease patients. Loperamide EP Impurity G is not absorbed orally and must be administered rectally or via an enema for gastrointestinal symptoms.
