Linifanib is a cyclic peptide that inhibits the mcl-1 protein, which is involved in the regulation of apoptosis. Linifanib has been shown to inhibit the expression of genes encoding for proteins involved in the signal pathways and angiogenic process, such as VEGF-A and MMP2 respectively. This drug has also been shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo models. The mechanism of action of linifanib is not yet fully known but it is thought to be due to its ability to induce autophagy or apoptosis. It can be used for the treatment of renal cell cancer and eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
