It is a branched-chain amine and has been shown to react with hydrogen gas at high temperatures to form 2,2-dimethylpropanoyl chloride. The yield of this reaction is dependent on the type of plant used as a starting material. This compound has also been shown to bind calcium ions, which could be useful for medicinal purposes. 2-Methylbutylamine has been shown to inhibit the activity of neuro2a cells and may have potential use in treating neurological disorders such as schizophrenia or Parkinson's disease.
