N-Methylpentylamine is an organic compound that belongs to the class of aliphatic amines. It is a colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor. N-Methylpentylamine has been used in the synthesis of epidermal growth factor and as a reagent in analytical chemistry because it can form stable complexes with light exposure and hydrochloric acid. N-Methylpentylamine reacts with nitrite ion to form stable complexes, which are useful for nitrite detection in water samples. The structural diversity of N-methylpentylamine allows it to react with various substances, including fatty acids and inorganic acids. This chemical is also soluble in organic solvents such as trifluoroacetic acid and intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurs between this molecule and other molecules.
