2-(Methylthio)pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde is a boronic acid that has been shown to be a good precursor for the synthesis of arylboronic acids. It can be prepared by condensation of methylthiourea with 2-chloropyrimidine, followed by treatment with an aryl boronate ester and an aqueous base. The presence of sulfate ions in the reaction mixture significantly increases the yield of this compound. This compound is also relevant to the synthesis of vinamidinium, which is used as an antibacterial agent against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex.
