1-Methyl-1,4-diazepan-5-one (MDO) is a synthesized compound that has been shown to inhibit the production of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and serum enzymes such as 3-acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin. It also has melanogenic effects and can be used for the synthesis of chalcones. MDO has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. This inhibition prevents the formation of an antibiotic/enzyme complex with enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
