1-Methyladenine is a nucleotide analog that inhibits the binding of adenine and guanine to the α-subunit of GTP. It inhibits the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and protein by blocking the assembly of ribosomes. 1-Methyladenine is used in cancer therapy as an adjunct to temozolomide chemotherapy. The drug has been shown to increase the sensitivity of detection for tumor cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis, which leads to cell death. 1-Methyladenine also has a physiological effect on female reproduction, causing inhibition of meiosis and ovulation in oocytes. It does not have these effects on male reproduction or on body formation.
