5-Methoxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione is an isomer of a molecule that has been identified as a possible cholinesterase inhibitor. It inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine. 5-Methoxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione binds to the active site of the enzyme and forms a covalent bond with the serine hydroxyl group. This modification prevents the hydrolysis of acetylcholine by cholinesterase and leads to rapid accumulation of acetylcholine at synapses. The structural modifications that lead to this inhibition can be achieved by using synthetic methods or by enzymatic reactions.
