2-Mercaptobenzylalcohol is a small organic molecule that has been shown to form hydrogen bonding interactions with chloride, hydroxyl group, phenyl groups, and ring-opening reactions. It is possible that the chemical ligation of 2-mercaptobenzylalcohol may be due to its divalent hydrocarbon nature. The reaction mechanism of 2-mercaptobenzylalcohol is different from other alcohols because it contains an asymmetric carbon atom. This asymmetry in the molecule could allow for the formation of an amide bond on one side while producing a hydrated product on the other side. This chemical reaction can be used as a nucleophile to react with an amine or any other nucleophilic compound.
