It binds to DNA and prevents the synthesis of RNA, leading to the inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death. 4-Methoxyquinoline has been shown to have a dose-dependent response in experiments with cancer cells in culture, with an IC50 (concentration required for 50% inhibition) of 2 μM. This drug is not active against bacteria or fungi. The chloride ion is thought to be necessary for the binding affinity of 4-methoxyquinoline to DNA. The sodium carbonate ion may also play an important role in the binding process by forming a complex with 4-methoxyquinoline and chloride ions, which stabilizes the interaction between these ions and DNA.
