4-Methyl-2-mercaptobenzothiazole is a biodegradable compound that is used in the analytical chemistry of environmental pollutants. It can be used to determine the presence of sulfur in an organic compound by reacting with sulfur to form a disulfide bond. 4-Methyl-2-mercaptobenzothiazole has been shown to cause toxic effects when it reacts with certain metals, such as copper and silver, which may lead to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
