2-[2-(3-Methoxyphenyl)ethyl]phenol (2-MPEP) is a palladium catalyst that inhibits the rate of benzyl group transfer. It also has inhibitory activities on chlorobenzene and benzyl, which are important intermediates in the synthesis of phenols. 2-MPEP is an effective catalyst for the synthesis of salicylic acid and its derivatives. This agent can be used to synthesize sarpogrelate hydrochloride, a platelet phosphodiesterase inhibitor and antiplatelet agent that is used to treat coronary artery disease. 2-MPEP is also used as a synthetic intermediate for salicylic acid and alkylate.
