It is prepared by the Wittig reaction of methyl 3-chloromethylbenzoate and magnesium chloride in the presence of tetrahydrofuran as an organic solvent. The reaction solution was neutralized with aqueous hydrochloric acid and then heated to remove the tetrahydrofuran. Methyl 3-methoxy-2-methylbenzoate can be converted to methyl ester by acetylation with acetic anhydride or chloroacetic acid.
