6-Methyl-3,5-heptadien-2-one is an oxime derivative that has been used as a sample preparation reagent. It can be used to isolate mixtures of organic compounds, such as mass spectrometric samples. 6-Methyl-3,5-heptadien-2-one has been shown to react with DNA in the presence of peroxide and form a methylene bridge between adjacent deoxyribose units. This reaction leads to strand breaks and fragmentation of the DNA molecule. 6-Methyl-3,5-heptadien-2-one also has organoleptic properties, which are detected by smell or taste. This chemical also has antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The antibacterial effect is due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis and alter cell membrane function.
