Mesitaldehyde is a nitro compound that exists in two forms, mesitaldehyd-90% and mesitaldehyd-10%. It is a diazonium salt that is prepared by the hydrolysis of o-nitrobenzoic acid with hydrochloric acid. Mesitaldehyde has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of dpp-iv, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of DNA. The hydroxy group on the molecule forms hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl group on the enzyme, which sterically hinders the interaction between substrate and enzyme active site. Mesitaldehyde also inhibits acylation reactions by reacting with the carbonyl group on the substrate to form an acid complex. The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet known. Mesitaldehyde can also be used as an analytical reagent for DMSO or DMF solutions due to its ability to react with deuterium atoms when exposed to light.
